The present invention relates to an automatic transmission equipped with a fluid coupling.
Japanese Patent Application Publication No. 2005-163495 discloses a conventional automatic transmission.
In the automatic transmission disclosed in the above patent document, a fluid coupling is disposed in parallel with a main shaft. The main shaft is rotatably connected to a crank shaft of a vehicle engine via a fluid coupling. The torque of the engine is transmitted to a drive shaft via a fluid coupling and a torque converter. A low gear and a high gear are selectively meshed with each other.
The fluid coupling comprises a driving member and a driven member. The driving member is fixed to the crank shaft. The driven member is fixed to the main shaft. Torque is transmitted between the driving member and the driven member when the rotational speed of the driving member is different from the rotational speed of the driven member. In this way, the torque of the engine is transmitted to the main shaft.
The automatic transmission disclosed in the above patent document further includes a clutch for selectively connecting and disconnecting the fluid coupling. When the vehicle travels on a downhill, the clutch is engaged so that the engine torque is transmitted to the driven member via the fluid coupling. When the vehicle travels on an uphill, the clutch is disengaged so that the torque of the engine is not transmitted to the driven member. In this way, the engine torque is selectively transmitted to the main shaft.
